Lime Essential Oil Benefits

Many citrus essential oils have astounding benefits for your health and your home. Lime essential oil benefits mirror many of those in the citrus oil family. It has a fresh citrus scent that many find enjoyable and uplifting.

That’s right, lime isn’t just a garnish for your drink or something to be made into a scrumptious pie. It can help you stay healthy and be used in your natural cleaning products for use around the house. Let’s look at some of the many lime essential oil benefits.

Antimicrobial Properties

As with most of the essential oils, lime oil has benefits as an antimicrobial. It kills both bacteria and viruses on hard surfaces. Add it to your favorite homemade cleaners to enjoy the fresh citrus scent while you kill germs. It can make your home smell fresh and clean. It can also reduce bacteria and viruses in the air when it is diffused in the home by using a diffuser.

Mixed with a carrier oil at a concentration of 1-2 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil, lime essential oil can be applied to wounds to promote healing and prevent infection. It can also be massaged into the scalp to help with killing lice infestation.

Digestive Health

It can safely be used internally in small amounts when advised by a medical professional. It is useful for treating internal infections of the digestive tract.

Although a study published in 2009 looked at lemon, the main constituent studied is present in all citrus essential oils. The constituent is limonene, and it is what gives all essential oils their unique citrus scent. It is also what gives them all the many useful properties they possess. Lime essential oil has as its main constituent limonene as well.

The study showed the gastroprotective effects of limonene in an animal model. It protected the stomach lining of rats from alcohol and NSAID induced gastric ulcers.

In another study conducted on the elderly in 2005, it was found that an abdominal massage with lemon, rosemary, and peppermint essential oils helped to relieve constipation symptoms. The effect lasted for 14 days post study. This study suggests that aromatherapy massage is effective in treating digestive issues.

Since lime essential oil has limonene as the main active constituent it is safe to infer that lime would be just as effective for reproducing the results of the study.

Although I don’t recommend using any essential oils internally without training on the effects and dangers of the use, it has been observed that lime essential oil can be used internally in very small amounts and for a short time.

Oral Health

Another of lime essential oil benefits is how helpful it is for oral health. Since it has antimicrobial properties it can be added to water to make a homemade antibacterial mouthwash that also tastes great. Add a few drops to water and swish as you would regular mouthwash. It is great for the teeth and gums too.

Its astringent properties make it helpful to stop toothaches. It can also help to tighten the gums and prevent bleeding of the gums. The astringent properties it also helps to contract blood vessels which can help to prevent and stop gums from bleeding.

Youthful Appearance

Another of lime essential oil’s benefits is its use for tightening and toning the skin as an astringent. It can be used to tighten the skin and muscles of the face to reduce the appearance of fine lines and to give you a more youthful appearance.

In addition, the antibacterial properties of lime essential oil make it useful for treating acne. This a much better choice than lemon essential oil.

The reason is that our lime essential oil is distilled. This means it is not phototoxic as are other citrus essential oils that are cold pressed. Cold pressed essential oils contain furocumarins that can make your skin burn under UV light. That is why this lime essential oil is much better to use on the skin, especially your face, than other citrus oils. You can purchase distilled lime essential oil here.

Be sure you are purchasing our distilled lime essential oil and not our key lime essential oil. The key lime essential oil is cold pressed and so would carry the same UV warning as any citrus essential oil other than our distilled lime or our bergamot FCF. We have made it easy to tell because the description states either distilled or cold pressed.

Now that you are aware of the many benefits of lime essential oil, you may want to make it a part of your essential oils arsenal for skin care, cleaning and for use in your oral health routine.
