Melissa Essential Oil-Melissa officinalis L.
Melissa essential oil, also known as Lemon Balm, is steam distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the plant and is sourced from Italy. Melissa essential oil is a top or middle note in blends. It blends well with Lavender, Geranium, and really any of the floral oils, as well as the citrus oils.
Melissa essential oil has the following benefits:
- Improves the mood and helps to relieve feelings of stress and anxiety. It is known as a tonic for the nerves to relieve nervous tension as well.
- Promotes sweating which helps to remove toxins from the body.
- Helps reduce fever
- Antimicrobial, so it can be used to prevent infection in minor cuts and scrapes.
- May help to lower blood pressure.
Uses: Place a few drops of Melissa essential oil in a diffuser, alone or in a blend, and enjoy its relaxing and restorative effects. Since it is anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic it can also be used in balms to treat joint and muscle aches and strains.
Do not take orally during pregnancy or with diabetes medication. May also interfere with drugs metabolized by CYP2B6. Do not use it on diseased or damaged skin or the skin of children under 2 years.
