In general, the properties of Rose Geranium oil are considered by aromatherapists to be mostly the same as those of Geranium essential oil and both have been described as aromas that usually have a “relaxing” effect, although a few people are said to find them stimulating. Most aromatherapists feel that the aroma of Rose Geranium essential oil is superior to that of Geranium, due to richer rose notes.
Rose Geranium essential oil is often described as “uplifting”, a property that many other floral essential oils share. Perhaps this is because floral aromas remind us of gardens, summer and romance.
The best way to know how you will respond to an aroma is to smell it. Geranium is a scent that has often been used in perfumes and products like soap so you may have personal associations to the aroma that come into play in determining how it affects you.
Rose Geranium oil has been classified as a strong skin sensitizing agent by the European Union. However, Tisserand and Young reviewed studies on this issue and state in their 2014 Essential Oil Safety: Second Edition that they have concluded that Geranium essential oil poses a low risk of causing sensitization reactions when used topically. Do not exceed 1.5% concentration in vegetable oil for topical use, avoid frequent topical use, and do not use on damaged, sensitive, or irritated skin.
Some recommend avoiding this oil in pregnancy and in the presence of estrogen-dependent cancers/conditions. There is a significant risk for drug interactions between Geranium essential oil used by the oral route and diabetic medication as well as medications such as cyclophosphamide that are metabolized by CYP2B6 enzymes. We strongly caution against the oral use of any essential oil.
